Dr. Allen Donahue
Senior Clinical Advisor
Dr. D. Allen Donahue is a licensed psychologist and U.S. Army veteran specializing in military mental health, psychological assessment, posttraumatic stress, and trauma-focused care.
His career began in military intelligence. Dr. Donahue enlisted in the U.S. Army Military Intelligence Corps in 1997. Following Russian-language training at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, he served as a cryptologic linguist and supported intelligence and security operations involving peacekeeping, counterterrorism, counterinsurgency, and combat missions across multiple theaters.
After leaving active duty in 2005, Dr. Donahue shifted his career toward addressing the behavioral health needs of service members and veterans. He earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and criminal justice, as well as a master’s degree in community counseling, from The University of Texas at San Antonio.
From 2009 to 2012, he served as a Research Associate and Protocol Coordinator with the STRONG STAR Multidisciplinary PTSD Research Consortium at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. His work contributed to behavioral research focused on improving the assessment and treatment of combat-related posttraumatic stress among military populations.
Dr. Donahue deepened that work through the Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program and the Military Stress and Health Research Lab at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He earned a second master’s degree, in psychology, in 2015 and completed his Ph.D. in psychology in 2020. His doctoral research examined differing presentations of posttraumatic distress and their relationships with specific forms of substance use. His clinical training also included a year-long predoctoral internship in health service psychology at the VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi.
During his doctoral studies, Dr. Donahue also addressed the needs of justice-involved veterans. He provided consultation on relevant mental health factors and assisted municipal leaders and staff in establishing the Blount County Veterans Treatment Court in Maryville, Tennessee.
Today, Dr. Donahue practices as a clinical psychologist in outpatient mental health, specializing in evidence-based, trauma-focused therapies for PTSD and other trauma- and stressor-related conditions. He serves as a team lead within a Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program and as a member of the training faculty for a predoctoral psychology internship. His responsibilities include clinical supervision for outpatient mental health and psychological assessment rotations, interdisciplinary coordination, and the training of emerging mental health professionals.
At Mission URSA, Dr. Donahue provides clinical guidance across veteran-focused research, program development, outcomes validation, and the responsible use of AI-supported behavioral intelligence. He assesses whether technology-supported behavioral insights are clinically relevant and appropriate for veteran populations. He also advises on trauma-informed standards, ethical safeguards, and human oversight.
At Mission URSA, Dr. Donahue brings clinical rigor to the responsible use of emerging technology. His guidance helps ensure that veteran-focused programs remain evidence-informed, ethically responsible, and grounded in the realities of veteran mental health.
